Immunotherapy and Cell Therapy

Immunotherapy is one of the fastest-moving areas in oncology and immune-related disease in recent years. This page sets out in one place the cell and immunotherapy services our partner institutions can provide, the conditions that must be confirmed in advance, and the cost ranges.

On indications and compliance

Cell and immunotherapy are highly regulated medical technologies. Whether they are applicable, and which protocol is used, must be determined by a licensed physician on the basis of the complete medical record and investigation results. The information on this page is intended to explain the scope of services; it does not constitute medical advice or a promise of efficacy.

Understanding Immunotherapy

What Problems Does Immunotherapy Address

Immunotherapy is not a single technology, but an umbrella term for approaches that mobilise the body's own immune system to fight disease. The following four categories are those most discussed in clinical practice.

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors

The immune system has built-in 'brakes' that prevent overactivation. Some tumours exploit these mechanisms to evade immune attack. Checkpoint inhibitors block these inhibitory signals, enabling the immune system to recognise and attack tumour cells again. This is currently the category of immunotherapy with the most substantial clinical evidence.

CAR-T Cell Therapy

T cells from the patient are genetically engineered so that they can recognise and attack tumour cells. At present, the most extensive evidence has accumulated in haematological malignancies such as lymphocytic leukaemia and B-cell lymphoma, while progress in solid tumours is still under investigation.

Therapeutic Vaccines

A vaccine-based approach that activates the immune system to fight tumours. Several technological routes remain at the clinical trial stage; these are suitable as an area to learn about during assessment, rather than an immediately available option.

Other Immune Cell Therapies

Beyond CAR-T, NK cells, tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes and others are also being explored in research and clinical applications. The efficacy and range of indications for these approaches are still being verified and require case-by-case assessment.

Services and Products

Stem Cell and Immune Cell Related Services

The services available through partner institutions cover three areas: immune cells, mesenchymal stem cells and exosomes. The following describes the scope of services; specific protocols and availability are subject to assessment by the receiving institution.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs)

A class of adult stem cells with self-renewal and multilineage differentiation potential, obtainable from sources such as bone marrow, umbilical cord, fat and placenta. Research areas of interest include immunomodulation, anti-inflammation and tissue repair.

  • Self-renewal and multilineage differentiation
  • Immunomodulation and anti-inflammatory directions
  • Tissue repair and regeneration research

NK Cells

Natural killer cells are a type of lymphocyte that can recognise and kill certain abnormal cells without prior sensitisation, and also participate in immunomodulation and antiviral responses.

  • Direct killing without antigen sensitisation
  • Cytokine secretion for immunomodulation
  • Antiviral and antitumour research directions

T Cells

T cells belong to adaptive immunity and carry out immune response functions. By function they can be divided into helper, cytotoxic and memory subsets, and are the core cell type in cellular immunotherapy.

  • Helper T cells coordinate immune responses
  • Cytotoxic T cells directly kill target cells
  • Memory T cells maintain long-term responses

Customised Cells

Selected cell types are modified through gene editing technology to acquire specific functions, then expanded by in vitro culture for use in individualised protocols.

  • Selection of cell types on demand
  • Gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9)
  • In vitro culture and expansion

Nebulised Stem Cell Exosomes

Exosomes are nanoscale vesicles secreted by cells, carrying proteins, nucleic acids and other bioactive substances. Nebulised inhalation converts exosomes into a fine aerosol for direct delivery to the lower respiratory tract, and is one of the research pathways in the repair of respiratory system injury.

  • Nebulised inhalation directly to the lower respiratory tract
  • Focus on lung tissue repair directions
  • Used as an assessment reference after respiratory tract injury

Stem Cell Exosome Powder

Through extraction and preparation processes, the bioactive components of exosomes are made into powder form, which facilitates storage and transport and can be used in scenarios such as nebulised administration.

  • Powder form facilitates storage and transport
  • Can be used in nebulised administration scenarios
  • Biocompatibility and safety require batch-by-batch assessment
Development Timeline

How immunotherapy reached where it is today

Immunotherapy is not a new concept. Its current clinical standing has been built step by step over more than a century.

1890s

American surgeon William B. Coley treated some sarcoma patients with bacterial toxins, regarded as an early prototype of immunotherapy.

Around 1900

German scientist Paul Ehrlich proposed the concept of using the immune system against disease, along with the targeted therapy idea later known as the "magic bullet".

1976

Intravesical BCG instillation was reported for the treatment of superficial bladder cancer, becoming one of the earlier immunotherapeutic approaches to enter clinical use.

1980s–1990s

Cytokines such as IL-2 and interferon were used for melanoma and kidney cancer; monoclonal antibody technology gradually matured and entered clinical practice.

2011

The first immune checkpoint inhibitor was approved, and immunotherapy formally became one of the mainstream cancer treatment modalities.

From 2017 onward

CAR-T cell therapy was approved, bringing cell therapy into clinical application, and the range of related indications continues to expand.

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions patients ask most often

Below are the questions that come up most frequently during consultations. If your concern is not covered here, send us your medical records directly.

Suitability depends on the type of disease, stage, previous treatments and general physical condition, and only a complete medical history and test results can support a judgement. We do not give a remote conclusion on whether treatment is possible; instead, we first refer the medical records to doctors in the relevant department for a formal assessment.
Cell and immunotherapy are regulated medical technologies in China and must be carried out within qualified medical institutions, in accordance with approved indications and clinical protocols. Any practice claiming to bypass regulation or make private arrangements falls outside the scope of our services.
For most immune cell and stem cell related services, a single cycle ranges from several days to about two weeks; some programmes can be completed on an outpatient basis, while others require short-term observation. The exact length of stay depends on the protocol, the cell preparation cycle and follow-up arrangements, and we will provide a timetable after assessment.
These usually include recent imaging (CT, MRI, PET-CT), pathology and immunohistochemistry reports, genetic testing results, details of previous treatment regimens and a medication list, and key laboratory results. The more complete the materials, the clearer the assessment conclusion.
The figures in the table above correspond to the package contents provided by our partner institutions, including cell preparation, infusion and the related medical services; they do not include international travel, accommodation, interpretation or accompaniment, or any additional tests or procedures that may arise during the process. We will set out itemised ranges after assessment.
Cell and immunotherapy may be accompanied by fever, fatigue and immune-related adverse reactions, among others, and management depends on the specific protocol and the individual's response. Such treatments must be carried out in institutions with resuscitation facilities and follow-up capability, and the doctor must complete risk disclosure before treatment.
